Server room cleaning: requirements, risks and best practices
How to prepare a server room cleaning assignment, choose suitable methods and review the result.

Start with an assessment
Before cleaning, walk through the room with the provider. How many racks are there? Are there raised floors, cooling units or adjoining plant rooms? Record the areas and access points in a room list so the scope is clear.
Define scope and approvals
Cleaning room surfaces, rack exteriors and equipment interiors involves different tasks. A work plan identifies approved areas, methods, time windows and contacts. For sensitive equipment, establish in advance whether shutdown or a separate ESD workstation is needed.
Select suitable tools and materials
Equipment, attachments and wipes need to suit both the surface and the technical environment. Controlled dust capture, appropriate filtration and an agreed ESD approach matter. Select cleaning agents against material compatibility and manufacturer instructions rather than applying a general household recipe.
Coordinate with operations
Agree access, work areas and transport routes with IT. Hoses and leads must leave access and escape routes clear. Protect cables and connectors against unintended strain. A named contact should be available for alarms or unexpected conditions.
Review results and hand over
Handover includes checking the agreed scope, identifying areas completed and recording observations. Add photos or measurements where commissioned. Each outstanding item should have an owner and a next step so it can be followed through.
Plan the next cleaning
A documented initial condition provides a useful basis for comparison. Recurring deposits, construction or changed usage may require revised scope and intervals. Cleaning can then become part of site operations and be coordinated with technical maintenance.
