CLEAN INSIGHTS / Prevention
How often should a server room be cleaned?
The room itself helps determine cleaning frequency. Usage, access and construction all inform a suitable schedule.

Start with actual needs
A rarely entered plant room faces different conditions from a server room beside construction. Review how the room is used and where dust enters. Previous cleaning records help show how quickly deposits return.
Establish a documented baseline
After an assessment or initial clean, record the surfaces and equipment areas covered. Approved comparison photos support later assessment. A defined baseline makes it easier to recognise how quickly new deposits develop.
Separate inspection frequency from cleaning dates
A visual check does not always require a complete clean. Establish who checks conditions, where observations are recorded and when findings are reported. Commission additional measurements against a clear objective and agreed conditions.
Plan room and equipment areas separately
Floors, rack exteriors, raised floors and equipment interiors may need different attention. Access and maintenance windows also vary. A staged plan allows routine work on accessible surfaces while grouping more involved tasks into suitable windows.
Review after specific events
Refurbishment, opened ceilings, new cable routes and unexpected dust ingress justify an additional assessment. Record affected areas and agree the cleaning needed. Do not simply wait for the next routine date when conditions have materially changed.
Adjust the plan over time
Compare conditions before follow-up visits and review whether the scope still fits. Recurring contamination is a reason to examine its source too. A consistent inspection format helps compare locations and coordinate scheduling across multiple sites.
